I've gone over the usual suspects in my mind, but that voice just doesn't ring any bells at all... (this is where you tell us it's actually Elvis, or John Lennon

Also a good guess Kira but no it's not The Bluesbreakers.
This is a band that played a lot of traditional American R&B in their live sets. Besides a number of songs that charted well they also had one major hit single (over a million sold) which earned them a gold record.
