Actually, I just listened again, all the way through, and on the second bridge he stops trying to sound like Buddy Holly for a bit, and lets his own voice come out... I think it's Frank Ifield (though I didn't know he had any hits in the US)

My apologies in advance for the next one, which I've sent to Peter, but just realised it was a hit in 1970, or possibly even 71 - at least in England - might have squeezed into the 60s in the US, I'm not sure.
Hit version was probably recorded in the 60s... maybe...
