Hello,
I'm new here and couldn't find any information about the value of such an instrument.

It looks quite expensive to me. What do you think? I hear it's quite rare.
I've been dreaming of an 8 string Rick for years now, but don't care much about the colour.

If you're interested in an 8-string Rick, the Redneck will be the most expensive you can find. It is likely there were less than a dozen made in this special color scheme. "Redneck" was one of three "special" color schemes created in the late 1980s (the others, the white "Tuxedo" and the black "Blackstar") that also featured painted maple fretboards with tiny dot position markers. These were designated "4003SPC" models along with the name, and came with certificates indicating the number in the limited run. Supposedly, there were 125 Tuxedo basses made, 125 Redneck, and 200 Blackstar, but there is no available record that shows that these limited runs were actually completed. In other words, the numbers above would be the maximum. Of the Rednecks, a few were made as 8-strings. A couple of 5-string Blackstars have appeared. I've seen photos of only one leftie Tuxedo. Don't know about the others.

While Rick eight-string basses don't appear very often on eBay and the like, good examples of others will likely sell for much less than a Redneck 8 which is one of the most highly collectible Rick basses. You may see a 4008 out there (an 8-string version of the 4001), and the 4003S/8 (8-string version of the 4003S). They have appeared in many colors, but usually the prime three; Fireglo, Jetglo, and Mapleglo.

Hi Lou. Welcome to the Forum. It's tough to put a value on such rare instruments. They don't come up for sale often. I'd say that of the last few 8 string Ricks that I've seen sold, they sold for around $2000-$3000. Condition is obviously important. And that's not for a Redneck (like the one in your link). That's for your more standard colored 4003S/8. They do show up on ebay from time to time, so keep watching and I'm sure one will surface in the next few months or so.

Actually I couldn't resist, and bought it . I like Ricks, I like rare, I love it.
Hopefully tomorrow it will be mine...
Thank you for your answers, I was curious about its "real value" even if I don't intend to sell it anytime soon and thought it didn't have an actual rate (is it the right word? sorry I'm french).

I can't wait to plug it into my Orange amp (I'm not home right now, have to wait a couple more days), but it already sounds fantastic. Lighter weighted and easier to play than what I thought. It may need a little adjustment on the E strings, but that's it.
Do you have any clue what kind of straplocks fits best? Or maybe it doesn't need any? I sure wouldn't want to drill holes in it!

RIC sells a Schaller strap lock button through their website that has the same threads as their original strap buttons, but I think the website boutique is closed for vacation.

It could already have strap lock buttons on it. If the strap buttons don't look like the mute adjusters on the tailpiece, then they are probably strap lock buttons that work fine with the Schaller ones (right?).

Hard to tell from the pictures, but to me it looks like the old style strap button. But the new schaller type fits perfectly, have put them on three basses so far
