Every now and then I see ebay listings for 12K vintage toasters. Any suggestions as if that would be a good idea in my new 4003 in the neck position rather than the newer 7.4K toasters? Can the old ones be easily wired in?

Unless someone stripped it from a V63, those 12k toasters would be from a guitar. No problem, but you would have to swap the bottom aluminum plate from the higain you take out to the 12k toaster. Tonewise you would sound almost the same as the higain, only a tad clearer. The 12k toasters sound very much like a current higain. Both are 12k wound pickups.

IMHO, to these ears, for my basses, YMMV, etc. etc. etc....

I agree, as John says the 12k Toaster is virtually the same sound. Certainly the one I had for a short while was almost identical and any subtle differences would be lost in the mix in all but the quietest music.

Effectively think of the 12K Toaster as a High Gain dressed in a nice suit.
