how long to wait

A friend will be receiving a new 4003 today . What's the recommended wait before opening the box ( to prevent any finish checking ) It's just several degrees below freezing here today .

He initially thought I was kidding when I mentioned he should let it warm up before opening the case ...

Well, the box from the factory says to wait 48 hours...

Which I've done with mine and never had a problem...

Sometimes I have waited, other times I have torn into it right off the bat. Never had a problem either way. If you have temperature extremes going on around you it'd be advisable to "do the right thing" and wait. Also, IF you disobey the instructions on the box and have finish damage your finish warranty would probably be in question to some extent, so there's that to think of.

It's warmer here. In fact, same temperature as the factory. Send it here and I'll inspect it for you.

When the bass is delivered, remove the case from the shipping box(es). The case will maintain the dead air space needed to slowly warm the contents. Unless where you live is significantly sub zero temperature, a 24 hour waiting period is sufficient to bring the bass up close to reoom temperature.

Well I ended up waiting around four or five hours. I didn't encounter any problems, but it turned out the bass wasn't particularly cold anyway.

I really thought Morrow was yanking my chain when he first told me I would have to wait before opening the box.

This is my first post, by the way. Hello everybody, from the happy owner of a brand new Fireglow 4003!

Of course, the saying around these parts is, "It didn't happen without pictures." So, you'll have to post a few, just so's we'll believe you...

Welcome to the forum, Colin. It has been reported that a Rick shipped in very cold weather then brought inside to a warm temperature can have the CV clearcoat crack (check). It's rare, but has happened. This is due to the different expansion rates of the wood and the finish.

I'm looking forward to seeing that new bass Colin . Tomorrow there's an all day Haiti benefit so the usual Sunday night blues jam won't happen until the following Sunday . I hope to see it then . ( I usually bump into Colin most weeks at the jam night in the local blues bar )

This is a wonderful place to learn the ways of the Rickeratti . There is a wealth of expertise and information here . I think you will enjoy the forum .

enjoy !
