Unreal. *sigh*
I took the strings off. It's a fairly clean separation. Freakin Ovations...
We'll see how good their customer service is cause they're gettin' a call tomorrow.

Scott, it looks like it was glued solidly. The failure is not in the glue joint; the wood came away and the glue is unaffected.
Spruce is a very fragile wood. Not much stronger in compression/tension than balsa or basswood. Something's going on with the wood from which that top was made.
I'm not an Ovation fan, but I do think this was impossible to predict. Unless there's something in the photo that I'm missing, I'd say a luthier could repair this very quickly at minimum cost with no ill-effects.

drywall screws or some duct tape !

as mr. jinge said...easy repair and the glue will bond those fibers lickety split ! but you gotta stop using rotosound bass strings on dat geetar.

Yup, let's give them a
standing ovation.
Bummer, Scott. It should be an easy fix though.

Agreed everyone....yeah, actually I've been using Pyramid flat bass strings on there...what was I thinking??
I realize it's a design flaw. We'll see what happens. I'm tempted to just glue it back down myself but I think I'll see how good customer service Ovation (Kaman) has. Who knows. Thanks for the input guys.

I've come to learn from the "Ovation" fan board that this is not an isolated incident. More to come....

Is that a cedar top? It looks a bit dark for spruce. There may be more tension on the bridge since the strings only mount to the bridge and do not go through the top with bridge pins. I know Breedlove bridges are designed like this also. I wonder if they have had any problems.

Of interest, whether we're talking about spruce, cedar, or redwood...
