Fender people, help me out---what is "overspray" ?

I see this word "Overspray" used in listings all the time, usually like this:

"All original paint with overspray."

Now.....does that mean an original paint job covered up by new paint 'over-sprayed' on top of it? Or does it mean a clear coat?

I have no idea, but don't want to pay top $$ for an "original" paint guitar that isn't original paint....

:)

In general, overspray is any paint or sprayed coating that misses its target. With guitars it means the stuff inside the control cavity that lets you know that the finish is original. :)

As far as I know "overspray" means an application of clear coat usually on surface of back of the neck turned worn. You can read a lot of ads (mainly on vintage Fender instruments) reporting "neck oversprayed": this means that back of the neck was so worn that needed a clear coat. Some people love the feel of a neck worn, some other not...

...in the case of Fender overspray, it usually refers to an original sunburst finish that was oversprayed at the factory in a different, solid, color, to correct an error or fill a certain custom color order.

Thanks, everybody. :D

I see it all the time, and figured it might have a few different definitions (though I assumed it wasn't the traditional meaning of "overspray," Kira :P )
