Hello to all from a gorgeous 4004L!

Hi everybody,

As of two weeks ago I am the proud owner of a 4004L Jetglo and I absolutely love it! :D This is my second Ric (my main bass has been a beautiful '95 4003 Fireglo that I also adore) and it truly is "the best kept secret in all of bassdom". I am an expat that has been living in Athens, Greece, for the last 5 years and it has taken me this long -plus 2 more years when I was living in the USA, total of 7 years- to find one and buy it! These things are so rare, it's easier to find life on another planet! The person selling it here said he preferred his T-Bird over this so his loss my gain! :?: Why anyone in their right mind would pick that over this monster is beyond me but I'm delighted it worked out this way!

Owning this bass is truly a dream come true for me because I have been wanting it for so long yet it is impossible to find, let alone in Athens, Greece, of all places! I am pretty sure I am the only owner of a 4004 in the country as they are pretty expensive and hard to come across. The 4003s are quite rare as well; actually, you can't buy them in a store, you either have to have someone bring it from abroad for you or but it over the net. I have yet to gig the 4004 but I recorded a track for my band last week and the producer said it sounded really nice. I have gigged the 4003, though, and you'd me amazed at how many people notice and remark on what a beautiful instrument it is. 8)

As many have said on this forum, how can you buy something that you have never seen or played anywhere, considering it costs a hefty amount of money? Well, let me tell you: After owning a 4003 and literally searching the entire Internet for info on the 4004, I was so confident that it kicks major @ss, so when I saw it in the flesh, I checked a couple of things and proceeded to buy it without any further ado. Believe me when I tell you that seeing it in pictures and seing it in real life is not even close! I have this bass next to me when I'm at home and I just keep admiring how beautifully simple it is, yet how astonishing the all black/chrome combination looks! It really is one beautiful bass!

Sound-wise, I don't care what various reviews on the net say, I think it's a monster! Those humbuckers are just huge! Whoever says that Ricks don't have bottom end, obviously hasn't played this one! It sounds so exciting to me! Huge bottom end, versatile (I don't think there's a problem to play any style on it), yet it retains the Rickenbacker sound but in such a different way than the 4003. It's like all of the above are combined in one!

The only two things for me are that a) the neck felt quite thick at first, coming from a super fast 4003, but I can say that I am getting used to it ok and b) the E string sounds kind of flat and I hope that it will not be too much of an issue to correct, judging from the info provided herein.

In conclusion, I absolutely love this bass, I still can't believe it that I own it, and to those seriously interested: Ιf you find one, you will buy it!

Just like you, I gig with both a 4003 and a 4004. My band does a hefty amount of Cream and Mountain, so the 4004 with it's fat humbuckers really approximates that Jack Bruce/Felix Pappalardi sound nicely!

Hi George, welcome to the forum. I hope you'll enjoy it very much. Nice to hear from another 4004 owner. I don't yet have a Laredo, but I really love my Cii basses.

Welcome George! Sounds like a great bass, try to post some pictures! I've got a 4004Cii and it's great, never had the chance to play a 4004L though!

Hi guys, thanks for your kind words; it’s good to be here. I have been aware of this site forever but since searching for info for the 4004 you had been my best source so I decided to take the plunge and here I am! :D

Joey, I was checking out your site yesterday and you have some really useful info on there! Nice! Plus that red Cii/5 looks mean!

In regards to the tonal differences between the L and the Cii I don’t think any descriptions can really help unless one hears both which is a pretty hard task, if you ask me, and darn near impossible where I’m living at now. The L was what was available and I just grabbed it! To be very honest though, I love the Maple/Walnut/Maple body but am not too crazy about the gold hardware. Matter of taste, I guess. Ultimately, the two basses might have some difference in sound but nothing too far apart, I would think.

I will post some pictures of my babies one of these days, but you know how it is: You always say it but never do it!

Rick does make amazing basses, though, and I have been very fortunate to have started on one at the age of sixteen (the 4003 FG) and don’t really care to look elsewhere because they have so much history and craftsmanship that it kinda feels like a “private club”. Those who know, know, and those who don’t, don’t. 8)

@ Woody: You are right. After an adjustment period, I am getting used to the 4004 neck and enjoying it as it is a more “proper” bass neck, compared to the 4003 which is super fast and more guitar-like.

@ John: Other than being in financial trouble, why on earth would you sell this beast :?: I don’t know if this series holds/will hold its value as well the classic 4001/4003 but just the fact that they are so rare and unique is enough for me to keep it and pass it on to my future offspring!

Hi Brian, Kira, Tom, Paul, & Gary! :)

Welcome George,

Glad you are getting on well with your 4004L and Congratulations!

I have a Blueburst 4004Cii and I too was a bit taken back by the neck width. I prefer slim & thin necks but once I heard it sing, I KNEW I would come around to love it.

A SUPER bass in any situation.

Enjoy!
