I bought a 74 4001

I bought this burgandy 4001. It had the most gigantic flatwounds on it - I think the E string used to be an aircraft carrier arresting cable - so I put some light gauge rounds on it. It took a little patience and about a week to get the neck flat but I did it.
What a sound this thing has. It could use a nut, and I was going to do the washers under the bridge trick, but it sounds so nice I'm not touching anything else.
Just wanted to share...

Thanks. It really is in good shape. I was a bit nervous waiting for it to arrive so I could get a good look at it.
My wife isn't going to divorce me either, so it's all good!

The neck on mine is quite thin front to back. Very nice...

What month? Does it have Red Dot position markers? Next time you have the pickguard off, see if its factory routed for a 1/2" neck pickup spacing. My NC 4001 has red dots and was routed for 1/2" (though I bought it with a 1" spacing guard and high gain- had pickguardian make a 1/2" guard and bought a toaster from RIC boutique- sweet)

It's an April and it does have the red dots and the 1/2" spacing. I have had the pickguard off a couple times and the 1/2" rout does seem to be factory. I too bought a toaster, but I can't bring myself to install it. It Just seems perfect like it is with it's high gains. I did put "vintage" knobs on it though...

A '74 should have the 1/2" factory route, IIRC.

Nice little gem there. Good thing is, you can get a custom PG and try the different configurations and see which you like best. I admit, I've been thinking about putting the hi gain back into my 4000 instead of the toaster.

I had thought so. I never really questioned it - but I did take it all apart and a look to make sure everything looked "real".

Yup I really thought I needed that toaster. Maybe someday.
