BAD RONBO NEEDS YOUR HELP...
yes...that's right...i bow to your insulence(or however you spell it )
working on my friend's '74 with the toaster in the neck. he said it always had low volume compared to the rear higain. so, here's what i need as it's out of my expertise.
i'm gonna change the toaster out. it's 7.83k and the magnets barely pick up paperclips. (6.48k on the rear.)
1) are the new rick toasters compatible in gain with a '73/'74 rear higain in output ?
2) are the 4003 boutique higain neck pickups compatible with the '70's rear higain or will it melt the pickguard ?
the other option is to get a used '70's/'80's neck higain.
thoughts fur moi ?
and also...is the push/pull pot the # 07346 in the electronics boutique ?

Re: BAD RONBO NEEDS YOUR HELP...
chris...the magnets are dead...the coil is fine. i put a ceramic magnet from a dimarzio p-bass pickup under the pole magnets of the toaster and it boosted output to just under the output of the rear higain. do not want to modify the underside plate to allow for placing a full sized ceramic magnet i have from a gibson dirty fingers humbucker. this would work, but do not want to modify the toaster. though i could make a new under plate with a wider rectangular opening. i'll wait for any news to my original query.

I can't answer any of your questions or otherwise help you in any way, Bad Ronbo, my apologies. But, I got a kick out of your post and had to let you know.
Man, I love my Ric!
Re: BAD RONBO NEEDS YOUR HELP...
Get a couple of rare earth magnets from Stewart Macdonald and regauss that sucker..
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Speci ... 3&xsr=4048
You tape each magnet to a jaw of a vise (a wood vise is best) and set the distance so that the pickup can pass between the magnets.
Make sure that the magnets want to attract each other and try not to pinch your fingers with them.
A polraity tester: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics ... 3&xsr=5990 can show you which way is going to be north on the pickup and try not to reverse the polarity unless you want it out of phase...
I've regaussed plenty of strat pickups this way and used a variation to charge my Horseshoe (probably once a year).
You won't ruin a pickup if you get it wrong so don't panic if you mess it up the first time...

You could also replace the magnets with new alnico rods. I've bought from these guys: http://www.magnetsource.com/Solutions_P ... lnico.html

Re: BAD RONBO NEEDS YOUR HELP...
I had heard of this rare-earth magnet trick here before and I went to StewMac to order the magnets. I mentioned what I was trying to do for the horseshoe on my '68 and they advised against it unless I really knew what I was doing. Seeing how my confidence was shaky at best, I canceled my order and am still stuck with a weak horseshoe. Could you all please post DETAILED instructions/diagrams so I could REALLY know what I was doing before attemting this? Feel free to dumb it down, I won't be offended! I don't want to jack up a vintage horseshoe, but I need to do something. I also have issues with string clearance. Either I have enough clearance for the open E to ring clear but any notes above the 9th or 10th frets hit the poles or I raise the pickup to clear the upper register and the open strings clang against the horseshoe. Any suggestions?

OR put them on the large magnet structure of a big woofer.

Re: BAD RONBO NEEDS YOUR HELP...
james got back to me with his resultz ! the current toaster equals fairly good to the rear higain from '74 so i'll go to it on his word. will order tomorrow and a push/pull pot.
Re: BAD RONBO NEEDS YOUR HELP...
The push-pull pot is indeed part#07346 in the RIC Boutique. There's a little locator pin on top of the pot. Cut it off. There's also a ground tab on the bottom that will keep it from fitting in the cavity when you put the guard back on. Cut it off too. You can use the side of the pot to solder a ground to. You may still have to remove a little wood from the area below it to get it to fit anyway.

Re: BAD RONBO NEEDS YOUR HELP...
