Back in the late summer of '64, my brother and I were barreling east out of The Dalles in Oregon's Columbia River Gorge. He was driving his '55 Chevy Bel Air and I was driving my '40 Chev Coupe. It was a beautiful day. We'd been working on the cars and it seemed like a good time to blow out some carbon.
A tune came blasting through my 40's radio and immediately caught my ear ... Walk, Don't Run '64. It was the first time I'd ever heard it. I remember pouring the coal to my Chevy's mill as The Ventures song went straight to my foot. I looked in the rear view and saw my brother right behind me. I stuck my head out of the window and could tell by the sound of his glass packs that he was tuned in and digging it, too.
I was just now listening to Walk, Don't Run '64 and it seems like only yesterday we were cruising the Gorge. It's amazing how a song can flood your mind with crystal clear, wonderful memories!
