I have just completed a "do-it-yourself" multiple guitar stand.
It is made from red oak.
My desire is to stain it and use it.
I like to keep a few guitars out of the case-as I play them all the time-if they are out.
What can I use on the parts that the guitars come in contact with the stand that will not hurt a guitar finish.
Years ago my Ric bass was kept on a single stand-the stand left a bit of a ghost mark on the rear of the base where it touched the rubber padding.
Any thoughts?

Latex is a good solution

I don't know specifically what your stand looks like, but if you're building it yourself, why not give some thought to lining the contact areas with black felt?

Lots of foam materials have components that degas. Rubber has sulfur, vinyl has phthalates. Phthalates are much worse, BTW.

Felt is finish-friendly.

I bought a Hercules stand about 7 years ago, as I luckily read about many stands rubber staining Rics.

Don't want to tempt fate....it's still going strong ('scuse the pun), and the best £20 I ever spent!

There are a half-dozen threads on stands in recent memory, on this Forum. Hercs and Ultimates seem to come out on top.

I own a couple of dozen stands, from cheapie $10.00 items to Hercs at $40.00 a pop. In my guitar room, I've got lots of slat wall hangers that range from new to used. The used ones were purchased from out-of-business Mom and Pop music stores.

Not one of these has ever nicked, dented, or stained or dulled the finish on any of my guitars. OTOH, I have gotten many a Rick in for refinishing, that was marred by close contact with a stand. Go figure. Guess I'm lucky in this regard.

I ended up using Brown Felt. I made sure I sanded the sharp edges off the wood prior to installing the felt.
Word of caution to latex users. This is very bad for a finish if it is left for a prolonged period.
That's what caused my stain on the back of my '92 v4001 natural.

I ended up covering my stand with a couple of old (but non-smelly) socks - no discolouring anymore.

I am however looking for a better stand - what kind of stand is better: one that supports the neck, or one that only supports the body?
(No room for a hanger, so that's no option for me.)

I can't recommend these enough. Extremely stable. Try to knock it over. Go ahead...Try! It's like a weeble. A little pricey, a little heavy, a little expensive? But the best I've ever seen:

Ive been useing a Rockstand 7 guitar stand for over 4 years now and have never had a problem with it effecting the finish not only on my Ricks but my Fenders too.

Here is the finished product.
It is Red Oak with Cork at the neck rest (heat glued).
The safety locks are brown strap leather.
I already have a few ideas for changes.
