Been on a Neil Young kick lately. What do you all think of Neil Young? I really like him, possibly one of the best songwriters around. Sadly, I own none of his albums, and was hoping that some die-hard Young fans will point me in the direction of a good album to begin with.

That's the classic

'Harvest' is a good place to start.

'After The Goldrush' is a killer (title cut is gorgeous).

'Everyone Knows This is Nowhere' is nice too (lots of early grind!)

'Are You Passionate' contains one of my favorite NY songs ever (the title cut).

Any one of his first four is an outstanding place to start. Neil Young (sans, Last Trip to Tulsa), Everybody Knows..., After the Goldrush and Harvest.

The man has put out some great solo stuff for the last 42 years. 34 studio LP's (not counting compilations) and to his credit, all on the same label.

By far the best.


I also like Rust Never Sleeps.


Neil Young is an acquired taste for many.....but just brilliant, IMO.

Tonight's the Night gets my vote for late-night listening.

I'd start here....

I'd agree. "Harvest" was one of my favorites back in the day. I lost my copy a long time ago. I wonder how that happened.

You can't go wrong with Harvest and "the springfield"

One of my favorites -- in the time period between Harvest and Rust -- is Comes A Time (1978). Neil is very laid back on this album, which features vocals with Nicolette Larson, who passed away recently.

Often overlooked as it comes between Young's career-defining 1977 three-LP set Decade and the decade-ending Rust Never Sleeps, Comes a Time is a gentle album that includes some of Young's most soft-spoken material. "Lotta Love" became a hit for Nicolette Larson, who adds harmonies throughout the album, and tracks such as "Look Out for My Love" and "Human Highway" are indicative of Young's divergent styles. Time Fades Away:

Last week, I got Neil Young's "Greatest Hits". I know I'm supposed to start with a studio album, but it was $8.99, too good to pass up!

Next Neil Young album I'll be getting is "Harvest". I really dig "Old Man" and "Heart of Gold". "Southern Man" is a good one, too.

There are so many but I really do like After The Gold Rush and Rust Never Sleeps - Live Rust. Catch the Rust Never Sleeps concert movie too. One of my favorite live cuts is Powderfinger - very powerful and very Neil.
