Dan Erlewine writes a regular column in VG about instrument repair. The 4/10 issue's columm is about making new saddles for a "4001" . What we really have here is a faker!!! Doesn't he know any better?

I just e-mailed Dan about it. Let's see what his response is. 8)

I saw that when it came out and suspected as much. Didn't expect that from Dan but I also thought the pics were poor and that I could be wrong. It'll be interesting to hear his reply.

It is clearly a fake, you can tell by the Allparts tailpiece, wrong body shape, wrong bridge pickup surround shape, inlays are far too bright, the strap button on the upper horn is in the typical faker position too far down on the horn towards the neck...........

I hate to say it, but I think most of the "regulars" here are more knowledgeable about the fine details of Ric basses than the guys that write for that magazine. :?

He replied to me this morning, here is what he said:
I wondered if that was a real Rick but never looked into it much since it didn't seem to matter with regard to Elliot fixing up the saddles. Plus Elliot worked on that bass and took the photos (I never saw the bass - just his photos later and thought he'd done a good fix). Thanks for telling me though! Dan
