Pick Up Height

ok so I've a bit of an interesting situation. My action is fairly low. Low in the normal playing sense. I've noticed that I'm getting an awful clank on the up pick (as I play with a pick). I used to have this problem when I used the bridge pick up until I figured out how to back the pickup away from the string enough to still have it retain its tonal strength. Well the problem has reared its ugly head again only this time its the neck pickup. I've tried to back the pickup off but then it rattles and generally sounds terrible. Short of upgrading my electronics which I don't plan on doing, what can I do?

There is a small rubber grommet on each of the neck pickup’s screw, between the pickup and pickguard, keeping it tight and prevent rattling. If you lower it “too much” it will start rattling. Take off the pickguard and put on a second set of grommet, so that you have two grommets on each screw. I think that should take care of the rattling.

or you can install a tension spring on the adjust screw. both my '73 basses came with them, one bass purchased in connecticut and one purchased in moncton ,new brunswick...do not know if they were original, but both sets were identical in that they were a tapered spring.

and so the problem reveals itself. the grommets on my screws were cut in half. fortunately i had some spares. i'll throw them on plus the extra trwo that i have and see how that works out.
