Toasters vs. Hi-gain

Can someone explain the difference? They're both single coil...correct?

both single coils - toaster = alnico hi-gain=bar magnet
depending on year of production they have different resistance
roughly - toasters 50's - +- 4K, 60's - +-8k, 80's/90's +- 10-12k, 2000 and on +- 7.5k.
hi gains - vary greatly through the years ...anything from 8k to 15k i haven't had a chance to look at new high gains with adjustable poles yet.

To my ears the Toasters sound brighter and a bit thinner and don't take as well to playing with a lot of gain, where the Hi-Gains are slightly darker sounding. I prefer the Hi-Gains myself - you can still get classic jangle and they rock! I think a lot of people like Toasters for their 12-strings and Hi-gains for the 6-strings.

SO I'm right in going the 620 route for a little more edge? I play alot of alternative music and am used to Les Pauls and Strats. I'm not sure the toasters would give me what I'm looking for.

620 is great instrument and hi gains are great pickups, u won't be sorry. and you can always take the beef and grit out of high gains with volume and tone control...

toasters are a completely different sound, in my view. very nasal and thin. A wall of nails as Pete Townshend said (or something like that). They're completely their own thing.
Hi-gains are twangy and more P90 like.

The neck toaster on my '67 330 can get very jazzy sounding; it is the bridge pickup that can get thin sounding, but that is JANGLE, really.

The hi gains on my 1991 330/12 sound more deep and midrangey, while the scatterwounds on my 2010 360/12 create so much treble and chime that I have to blend the bridge and neck pickups and back down on that small fifth knob to tame the treble a little. If I had to choose one 12-string, it would be the 360 with toasters.

Yep -- count me in that Toaster for 12-ers and High Gain for sixers club.
And Ric HBs are good sounding on sixers too.
And there's a lot to be said for dressing up all Ric pickups with Toaster covers !!!
