Re: Frat Rock
That's the version of the Kingsmen AFTER much infighting, backstabbing, and litigation. The lead singer in that clip is apparently the group's original drummer and he had a few under-the-table things going as he assumed legal ownership of the group's name and then insisted that he be made frontman. For a long time he would lip-sync to the original vocals of "Louie, Louie" and then go back to live vocals for other tracks, much to the confusion of audiences. Meanwhile the original singer sued and barred them from doing so, as it was his voice. He won, hence the drastically different sound of the vocals. As for the Vox gear, they also played ALL Vox in their appearance in AIP's How to Stuff a Wild Bikini with Annette, etc. Vox was giving a lot of gear to AIP for promo purposes. The Bobby Fuller Four would appear with all Vox gear despite being a Fender/Gibson group in the 1966 film The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini, backing Nancy Sinatra.
Most of the info on the Kingsmen comes from the good Kingsmen comp. from Rhino.

Re: Frat Rock
My mid 60's ('63-65) band, "The Skylarks"-named after my my Gibson GA-5T amp, not the car-did a lot of The Kingsmen's album cuts and hits. "Don't You Just Know It", "Jolly Green Giant", "Little Latin Lupe Lu". Fun stuff!

Classics!
"In the valley of the...HO HO...."
Re: Frat Rock
It always cracked me up on "Jolly Green Giant" when they start calling out vegetable names in the background. Our bass player would do that and try to come up with different ones.collin wrote:Classics!elreydlp wrote: "Jolly Green Giant", "Little Latin Lupe Lu".

I forgot "Death of An Angel"; one of their few "serious" songs.

Re: Frat Rock
How 'bout: Boney Maronie, Land of a Thousand Dances, Shout, Barbara Ann, and the ever popular, What'd I Say (Ray Charles), with 25 made-up dirty verses... "See the girl with the red dress on.... She can .... .... .... all night long, Hey! Hey!".
I'm thinkin' you guys played at least 3 or 4 of these, Skip. My little band of 13 year olds did.

Re: Frat Rock
All of 'em!
We did Wilson Picket'sversion of "Land of 1000 Dances"-still one of my favorites. Our little 13-year-old piano player nailed "What'd I Say" on his Wurlitzer and I sang. I think we only had 24 verses though.
