I think you hit the nail, G! Perhaps the only absolutes in music are things like 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 time and other such musical directions. But even then, fermata and rubato are open to interpretation. I agree 100% that the overall sounds, and resultant classifications of given musical pieces, are a matter of perception, interpretation, and the ears of the beholder.
