Welcome, Michael. Before production of the 4001 ended in the early '80s, RIC produced some basses with black binding and black pickguards. Can't tell from the photo, but do you have a black truss-rod cover also? Despite the black binding on the body, the necks of 4001 basses were nearly always bound with white, as yours is. After the 4003 was introduced, black-bound basses also had black-bound necks - a quick field mark to determine whether a black bound bass is a 4001 or 4003. Yours also has a Bad-*** bridge installed, an aftermarket item. Looks like there's trouble with keeping the treble-pickup surround in place (!).

Hi Paul
Thanks for a quick answer. Yes the truss-rod cover is black. Unfortunately the Badass was there when I got the bass. The original bridge wasnt included.
Got the pickup sorted now so the tape is removed.
I got the bass for $200 20 years ago.
Thanks again
/Michael

Love the bass! I like the all-black basses in general...
How does yours play and sound?

Michael, is the black truss-rod cover the raised-letter type or the back-painted plexi type? The latter are pretty rare and desirable, so take care of it.

Wow, Harry. Great basses there.
Paul the truss-rod cover is the raised-letter type.
I really love this bass. I am a guitar player

but love to play the bass. I use it in my studio. I haven't played the Rick for years due to bad electronics, switch, pickup. Now everything is fixed and I'm really really pleased with the bass, sounds awesome, great neck etc.
