i have a 1967 - November 4000 Bass. Got it mid-70's. Someone had already done a drippy refinish. I discovered that it was routed for 2 p/u's. I stripped it and took it to my guitar builder friend. He made a new cover & put in 2 Bartolini's. Also added a Star's (brass) bridge/tail piece. Also different tuners (which required installing string trees). I was not happy about the trees. So it sounds better, intonation is good, even more sustain. In short it's a real player but how do I value it? I'm looking at having to sell it

John's right, you really need some pics. Sounds like a bass that a "player" would really enjoy and a "collector" probably won't... that tends to devalue it as far as cash goes, but on the other hand maybe you can spin it for its mojo? Good luck.

Mahalo for your replies. Going to re-string w Rotosound round wounds and photograph today. Looked on eBay & original parts like name plate, pick guard, tuners & tailpiece are listed for sale. I'll get some before & after pix up today. And some under the hood & original parts shots too.

I remember right after we modded it in the mid 80's, I walked into Don Weir's Music City in North Beach SF. There on the wall was a brand new one, exact as mine. I was told that it was a new "Paul McCartney model" re-issue... Cue sound of Pac Man losing.

Ummm...if the bass really is a '67, you won't be finding a correct tail piece, bridge, or pick guard on ebay. Pickguardian.com can custom make you a pick guard just like the original, but you'd have to provide what's left of your old one, or maybe a screw hole pattern or something. The bridge and tail in '67 would have been cast aluminum. Today they're made out of zinc, and I don't think today's tail would fit properly. It definitely would have two extra screws, and the bridge might not be able to adjust low enough.

Stringing up a 60's bass with Rotos' potentially invites many problems. Go for a lighter gauge string and see how much better the action and set up of the bass is.

I'm curious to this. I've strung up my 68 with darn near every type of string - except flats - and have had zero issues with it for 18 years. Am I the lucky one?

Statistically speaking....yes.

i've had no issues with my '64 or '68 with rotos or other rounds other than intonation which pulling the tailpiece back cured so i'm in with scott.
