US V UK 3

This one quite apt this week due to passing of Crispain St Peters.

We Five had a top 3 in US in 65 and CSP made number 2 in UK in 66, though his version did make 36 in US in 67.

Original of course by Ian and Sylvia but was not a hit not sure if it was even a single.

Clear winner for me by a long way but as always difference of opionion makes for a good debate.

Yes, definitely Crispian St Peters - interesting arrangement and vocal sound.
The We Five version sounds very much what used to be called "bubblegum". (Best thing in it was the - Rickenbacker, of course! - twelve-string).

We Five -without question.

Their tiered arrangement, big crescendo, cool tom pattern, bass motif, and Rickenbacker outshine Crispian's rather tepid, melancholy delivery.

I'll go with the We Five; it's a much more dynamic (in the sense of getting both loud and soft at the right point in the song) and better arranged version.

Vanguard Records did put Ian and Sylvia's version out as a single, but they did so only after the We Five's cover was already getting a lot of airplay. Their version has the following verse which neither the We Five or Crispian St Peters used in their covers;

I got drunk and
I got sick and
I went home again

No need to say sorry that's what I want differing views can be good.

To cap it all the USA held us to a draw and I bet 905 of US don't even know you're in the World Cup.

Barry McGuire had a hit version here (Norway), so my vote goes to him!

It would be really hard to choose between Barry McGuire...

...and Joe Dassin

(well, for me, of course).
But since they don't take part in the battle, my vote's for Crispian St Peters.
