"The Shearers" - loads of 4002 fun!

Last year I did some recording for a project called "The Shearers" using a 4002 straight into the mixing board via the XLR jack. You can check out the tunes at:

Great playing, Steve! I checked out 'Apocalypse Now' and 'Colours.' Nice -playin'! A sign of a bass player having a good time.
That bass has a very 'Jazzy' sound that I've noticed most 4002's have. Are you using flats on it?

Hey Mark - yes, the bass has TI flats on it. The XLR output only sends the bridge signal, so you definitely get a very mid-rangey "jazz" sound.

I've heard that about the 4002 - that the XLR only carriers the bridge pickup. I wonder how hard it would be to wire both pickups to the XLR jack... doesn't seem like it would be too tall of an order, unless the neck PU is the wrong impedance... I'm no electronics pro - just hazarding a guess.

IIRC, the bridge pickup has an extra winding/leads for the XLR output that the neck pickup lacks, unless said bass has two bridge pickups (I think Dave Pascoe has same).

Yup, the XLR is driven off of a separate winding, mostly to get the level and impedance right. XLR is "balanced" (or in modern parlance, "differential") signaling, nominally 600 ohms. In order to run both pickups out through a single XLR, you'd have to mix the signals and then buffer the impedance to match the balanced line. This could be done passively with resistors and transformers, but it gets difficult to make sure you don't degrade the signal, especially when you don't have a lot of drive power like you'd have from an active circuit...

Makes me wonder what the line of thinking was going into designing the circuitry to accommodate just the bridge PU for XLR impedance and not both.

Dont' you mean where did I find TWO extra pair? My bass came with HB1's.
