What To Cover?

I'm looking at bringing in some Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers songs into our band catalog and there are several I've played in the past but I thought it would be interesting to see what some of my fellow forum-ites thought about good candidates from the band, the man, or just songs they're connected with ("Ways To Be Wicked", for example).

I would suggest Mary Jane's Last Dance, The Waiting, Free Falling, Listen to Her Heart, Don't Come Around Here No More, Learning to Fly, and You Wreck Me. Can't go wrong with those!

Good suggestions so far.
I'd also consider "American Girl", "I Need to Know", "Running Down a Dream".
Surprise everyone by including "Running Man's Bible" or "I Should Have Known It" off the new Mojo album.

If you know of someone who can play keyboards, or you can do it yourself, add REFUGEE to the mix. Maybe a little HERE COMES MY GIRL, A WOMAN IN LOVE and YOU GOT LUCKY, too.

I'm surprised no one has suggested "Even the Losers" (until now). It kicks. Tom

I think I'll start with "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and "You Wreck Me". If that works, I'll push for "American Girl", "Anything That's Rock N Roll" and "Ways To Be Wicked".
With the last band I was in, we did Ways To Be Wicked as sort of a hybrid of the Playback version and the Lone Justice version. It always went over really well. We certainly enjoyed ourselves.

+1!!! These are excellent rockers and crowd pleasers. Additionally, they aren't all that complicated. We've done at least the first two, and possibly the third, at some of the minicons. Not sure on the 3rd one, but that could be concktail-induced memory fade, which reminds me of my oft repeated axiom to fellow jammers; "pick songs you can play drunk". This is a good axiom even for teatotallers, because the fewer the chords, the easier to learn, and the more difficult to trainreck during a live performance!

"Free Girl Now" from the oft maligned Echo is also a nice straight up rocker. "Change of Heart" is another fun one. And don't forget "Listen to Her Heart," either.

I like all of those! Another great song from Echo is "About To Give Out". I wouldn't mind giving that one a twirl because I could start with a simple bass line approach and expand it as I got better.

My old band did "american girl" and "stop draggin my heart around" whenever our girl singer could sit in.
The band I just joined heavier than the last so I'm suggesting "honey bee".
