This 4th, I got to talking with my neighbors' Stepdad, and oddly enough, he happens to own a RIC bass..According to him, it's a '73 4003JG with CB and FWI...Seems like somewhat of a rare bird. I suggested he come here to register it, and also to make a whole bunch of new friends. Hopefully we'll hear from him soon..A couple of pics..Could it be a 4001?

Looks like CB but not FWI, so that must make it especially rare.

Yeah, upon closer examination, the inlays are not Full Width..Not sure what he's got, which is why I defer to the experts!

Certainly is! I'd put this in mid 1973 as it retains the checker binding, but the smaller inlays show the first of the 1973-75 transitional changes has occurred. Looks nice!

It is nice. Something that caught my eye is the bridge PU. It almost looks to have an aluminum "border" with a bit of a dent in it.

This is a little later '73 because the inlays are not the interim tannish looking but the later poured ones. The bridge pup is sitting on an aluminum plate like the earlier pickups, and this bass would have come with a shorter cover. Looks nice!

It does and you are.

4003 basses didn't sell until what, late '79?

I'd say it's from June or July of '73. My August '73 is still the only one from August that we've seen so far with checkered binding.

mid to late '73 would be my guess - 4001 - jackplate number?

+1.
What looks like aluminum around the bridge pu is probably just where the black paint is worn off and the green bobbin is showing through.

+2, it's like my June 1973 Fireglo (the one with the goofy replaced bridge pickup).
