A friend has an '80 4001 in need of a re-fret and is thinking of taking it to Rickenbacker. Will they do it, and if so, any idea how much.
Also interested in recommended repairmen in the OC/San Diego area who could do it.

Skip -- check with our buddy Joey,V. who is an expert on all things regarding Ric basses.

You might have his e-mail address too - if not I'll send it to you.
I don't think you can take any instrument to Ric for repairs except for Warranty work on new ones.

Correctimundo. Any of our OC forumites can recommend, and also Dane might pop in with the name of the luthier he used to use to help with his conversions.

If originality is important, you'll want someone who can refinish the fretboard in conversion varnish, a lá RIC.
Some tradesmen will tell you that nitro is just as good.
What they mean is "I don't know how to spray conversion varnish", or, "I'm too lazy to spray conversion varnish".
Others will tell you it can be done without refinishing the fretboard, by cutting around the frets with a sharp knife to separate the frets from the varnish.
It can, but the areas next to the frets will trap crud and sweat.

I've had Nick at Norm's Rare Guitars in the Valley refret my Ric. I'm happy with it.
