Does anyone out there know which Byrds record has "I Come and Stand at Every Door" on it? (My guess is "Fifth Dimension" since that's one of the few early records I don't have on CD.) And does anyone know anything about the origins of that song? Is it a traditional folk song?

"Another cover version on the album, "I Come and Stand at Every Door", is perhaps the most macabre song in The Byrds' oeuvre. The song's lyrics, which were adapted from a poem by Nâzım Hikmet, recount the story of a seven-year-old child who was killed in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The song describes how the child's spirit now walks the earth in search of peace in the nuclear age."

That is a creepy song which gave me nightmares as a young teenager.

There was a documentary about the Mississippi River (I think) some years ago which used this tune as the main theme. At the time I didn't know it was a traditional tune and was confounded that McGuinn received no credit for the music.

Although the words are a bit creepy, I think the music is beautiful. It sounds great with the guitar signal heavily compressed and played with a thin flatpick.

That whole album is a gem, 'cept maybe for "the Lear Jet Song" ......but I agree, "I Come...." is a beautiful song, and I was a mere lad of 15 when I heard it, and I got it IMMEDIATELY......spooky, but haunting as heck

My personal fave on 5D was "John Riley".......way cool even today

John Riley is one of my favorite Byrds songs, also. I wish that they did more songs like this one.
