If not a Rick...

...then what would your favorite bass be? I sometimes envision what my life as a musician would be if it weren't for Rick basses, and although I shudder at the notion of a Rick-Free Universe, I think about which basses I would have ended up with in their stead. Since I like the clang & twang, I'd have to go with a Fender-P ala The Sex Pistols, The Pretenders, The Jam, The Clash, Firehose, SadHappy... that snarly gutteral sound similar to that of a Rick when applied the same way. A rivaling number two would be the Stingray with that cutting presence cranked.

Stingray! It's been my gamer for most of this year ('cept for the Beatles gigs).

A Precision Bass (MIJ, Road Worn, or Highway One) or a 2-band Stingray... possibly a 4-band Big Al but I'm not sure about their necks yet. I'd like to get another Stingray actually but it's hard finding a 2-band for the right price.
Also I discovered this guy named Dan Atkinson who makes Ps and Js for not too much cash, and they sound great, so maybe I'd go for one of his Precisions instead of an FMIC P.
If I had way more cash to spend, maybe a Dingwall Afterburner series bass. Scott Pope's P Bass is fanned like those are and I like the tone a lot.
The lucky thing is, I have been so satisfied with my Rics. For now, and probably for quite some time, 4003s are all I own.

If the world was Rick-less, My main bass guitar would be either a MM StingRay (I do have a StingRay5) or a Precision Bass (I do have a Precision Bass). I sometimes threaten the P-Bass with the idea of adding a J-Bass pickup in the bridge position.

Pre CBS or late 60's P, (especially with an A neck/rosewood board), pre EB Stingray, and a long scale 70's Alembic.

I used to love Gibson basses in the old days. Give me a Ripper or an EB3 and I'll be a happy camper in a rickless world.

Ta, Mark, for that blast from the past. Will you look at that getup?!!!
That's a later version of the Ripper. My old one had the older black pickups and a burst finish. The Varitone switch made those basses amazingly versatile.

If no Ricks, then I guess I'd go with a Precision. However I currently have an early '80's Yamaha BB400 that is essentially a precision style bass with the pickup placement turned around. It's one of the early models made in Japan, build quality is very good and it has lot's of miles and mojo. A real Precision killer.

I had a Ripper in the 70's! Pretty decent bass. This may sound kind of odd but of all the other basses i've played over the years the Jerry Jones Longhorn has been my favorite choice until the Ric.

Totally! I'd go with a Ripper (or a Grabber) any day.
