As I plan to make my #1 C64S more of a work-horse, I was wondering if I could fret it with stainless steel 6100 frets. I realize I will probably need a new nut too, but I really want to be able to dig into the fretboard and not have to worry about my flats buzzing. I also want to be able to lower my action. What does a re-fret go for? Can I do it myself? I realize this may belong in the tech section. If it does, I apologize. You can bounce it there if need be. I was just wondering if anyone has re-fretted there Ricks with 6100 or larger frets. I was looking for any feedback on the procedure.

I further apologize for not searching for this topic first. I still want to know if anyone is using 6100s

If your frets aren't worn out yet (I can't tell based on the first post), maybe you should just stick with them for the time being. They're small, but I believe they're about as durable as anything else. Dingwalls use pretty small frets and they are supposed to be quite tough.

If your flats are buzzing and you want to lower your action maybe you'd be better off just having someone detail the frets that are presently on the bass, and/or just give it a setup.

My current frets are not worn. However i've always seem to have a problem with fret-buzz. When I took it to my luthier, he initially told me i'd need a complete re-fret. When I took it to the MARF at Pick of the Ricks, Jeff (JPS) tried to tweak it. He did a fantastic job, but it didn't take long to revert. Chris suggested a new nut, but I never moved on it. Now that I am going to part ways with my NEW C64S, I want to make sure my main bass is perfectly playable without me having to lightes my picking hand. I am currently having a Springsteen-style Esquire. I'm having SS6100 frets put on it. I was just wondering if it could be done myself, or should I trust it to a pro.?

Kind of late to this thread, but there's nothing about large frets that would allow for lower action on a bass without buzzing. For that, you want LEVEL frets that are well-crowned. I could be wrong, but it doesn't sound like any of your techs have done a fret-levelling yet.

Richard, where does the buzzing occur? I mean, does it happen with just some particular notes and strings or is it everywhere? Just curious.

Something about "digging in" and low action just don't match up. You really can't have both.

usually F through G sharp on the E string. It's fine "ok" afted adjustment however, the neck is by NO means as flat as the majority of 4000 series players like. If i post pics of my 12th fret, you guys would be horrified.

6100 frets - that would be one LONG neck!
