Newest acquisition... July '86 4003S MG/BT, serial number ZG1794 (hence the nickname).
I traded even a '77 Fender P for it.
It will be given to my son for his upcoming 13th birthday - his first Rickenbacker.

I think that looks great! Saw the discussion at the Last Bass Outpost - I think you made the right decision!

Thanks Harry!
The neck is substantially thicker and wider compared to my Shadow, although they are only two months apart.
Strung with TI flats (my son's favorite) it sounds very warm and round. The bridge pickup sounds more massive than my other Rics.

Funny. My ZK has the nicest neck of all Rick's I have and had. And I like small and thin.

From what I gather, the Shadow necks are the skinniest of all, so any comparisons might seem a bit skewed. By my measurements, my Shadow is 107mm at the first fret compared with 112mm for my '72 4001. I have all the statistics for my collection written down, but failed to put the headers on the table. Somewhere around here is the girth table that John Algier is keeping. It shows the girth at three points on the neck for all the basses that have been submitted. Is it first, fifth, and 12th frets?

Your son has a great dad...nice present!
Love my '89 4003s. Though she's slowly losing the black trim. Since this photo the pickguard has been changed to white and the neck p/u surround to chrome.
BTW, the neck is fairly thin.

An excellent birthday present...for a very lucky kid!
Nice choice Ilan.
My '87 4003SMG is one of my favorites. Great tone, great neck...a comfortable, durable work horse. I swapped out the BT on mine for chrome and white though:
