One of my song writer buddies is a real capo nut. As a matter of fact, he wrote a song poking fun at himself called "Capo Madness." Well, I'm not going to that extreme, but I was wondering which capo might work best for covering the E, B, G, and D strings only. I'm not averse to taking a hacksaw to a capo to modify it successfully. Shubb is out. Even a banjo capo won't quite work. Would a Kyser work?

I just tried a Kyser on a 620 and it didn't work because of the fretboard radius. It might work on a 480 or similar guitar with a nearly flat fretboard, but it still would not be a good fit.

The one I have from G7, the Performance Capo, might lend itself to a partial positioning. Short of that, an old-fashioned Dunlop elastic one might be modified by removing part of the rubber with a hacksaw (?). That's all I can think of for the moment.

I like this idea! Thanks Brian. Full disclosure: I can play "If I Needed Someone" without a capo. But I get pretty fatigued holding down that barre chord at the 7th, 8th, and 9th frets.

How about slipping something under the capo to hold down those strings, but keep the capo from contacting the others?

Flip a Kyser upside down and you can cover the B, G, & D. My band does this on a song from the new album.

A Planet Waves NS Capo can easily be cut down as the backside of the clamp is short, so it will work perfectly. Plus, they are inexpensive, but well designed and made.
