Yes with Chris Squire

Has anyone seen the Yes concert that DTV is showing? The original lead vocalist, lead guitar player, and Chris Squire were all there. I guess Yes recently produced an album and played a few of their new songs in the beginning. Squire played his classic Rick on the old songs, but he played a different bass on the Yes new stuff. I never could identify what make it was. Anybody else??

I guess I'm out of touch, Jack. What is DTV? Direct TV? If so, I have Fios, so someone else will have to weigh in on this one.

Correct! Direct TV. They have their own channel that shows a lot of different concerts etc.

I believe the recent Symphonic Yes concert has been on the telly quite a bit.
On this He used a Lakland "Bob Glaub" P-style bass on the newer numbers:

You are correct pumpkinhead! One of the guys at TB said the same thing. Thanks for replying.

Sorry Jack
I didn't realise that you were the one who posted on Talk Bass. I just got there by Googling Chris Squire and Lackland after seeing the pewter P-bass model on YouTube.

Nice sound, although I think I prefer the Ric on the classic Yes stuff.

If Chris is playing the Lakland or his Jazz Bass on a tune live, it's most likely that he also used that bass or a similar one (like his beloved tele bass) on the studio track as well. Astral Traveller, South side of the sky, In the presence of, Face to Face, Sweat Dreams, I believe were all on a Jazz or Tele bass.

And Astral Traveller, to use the 21st fret - because it was (i guess) recorded on that MG Rickenbacker, which was a 21'er.

I thought Astral Traveller was done on a Jazz or Tele Bass originally. I could be wrong, but Chris has always maintained that the bass he uses in concert is the same or close to the one used on the record.

"Astral Traveller" sounds like a Ric to me but wasn't "A Time And A Word" also the Telecaster?

On the subject of Time And A Word,
A while ago I dropped the album version of TAAW down a semitone on Cubase into E (which is its pitch when Yes played it live) so I could practice the bass and backing vox at home.
I was surprised to hear how over the top the tremelo was on the bass guitar (and this is pre-Starship Trooper).
Before the pitch change you couldnt even detect any tremelo on the bass.
Was that the reason for the change of pitch?
Try it and see.

Telecaster was used at least for this playback version.

Love the first three seconds...

Two observations - was this mimed - Chris's picking doesn't always correspond with what is played. Second, what the heck is that hanging off Jon's belt??
