ANOTHER TIME AROUND: If you were lucky enough to have attended Buffalo Springfield's last concert and said to
yourself, "I can hardly wait to see those guys again," well, your chance is coming up - after nearly 42 years of waiting.
The retrospectively supergroup, whose members included Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, will reunite for a pair of concerts on Oct. 23 and 24 at Mountain View's Shoreline Amphitheater in the Bay Area.
The concerts are part of the annual benefit for Neil and Peggy Young's Bridge School, which helps children with severe physical and speech impairments. The band will include Young, Stills and Furay, with longtime Young bassist Rick Rosas
sitting in for the late Bruce Palmer, and Crosby, Stills & Nash drummer Joe Vitale taking over for the late Dewey Martin.
[ note -- no mention of Jim Messina.]
The last time Buffalo Springfield played in public was May 5, 1968, at the Long Beach Arena. It was more historical than musically excellent, at least from the weary-sounding bootleg recordings we've heard of the show. Still, what a story it makes for the scant 3,600 people who attended the show, which must've been a bit of a marathon, what with a four-act undercard that included Country Joe & the Fish, Dr. Hook, Canned Heat and Smokestack Lightnin'.
Buffalo Springfield's last show was an eight-song set that included Young's "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" and "Mr. Soul" and Stills' "For What It's Worth" and an extended finale of "Bluebird."
Young's Bridge shows always feature impressive line-ups and, while the Springfield reunion is the high point this year, there's plenty more to make a Mountain View trip a small inconvenience. Playing both days will be Buffalo Springfield,
Pearl Jam, Modest Mouse, Grizzly Bear and Merle Haggard with Kris Kristofferson.
Joining that cast on Oct. 23 will be Elvis Costello, Lucinda Williams, Billy Idol and Jackson Browne with David Lindley.
Additional acts on Oct. 24 will be T-Bone Burnett's Speaking Clock Revue starring Elton John & Leon Russell, Elvis Costello,
Ralph Stanley, Neko Case and Jeff Bridges.
Tickets, at $47.35 to $171 per show, go on sale at 10 a.m. Sunday at LiveNation.com.
