I won't comment on the typo in Auntie Beeb's news story title!
BBC News have a bit on OMD:

Is that a Ric bass I see in that little 80s picture?

Certainly looks like one. I would claim that OMD were pretty far from cool, but maybe they tried to make up for it by using cool basses...?
(BTW, I do see the word Gay (as in Enola Gay) on the page you linked to, so I would presume the infamous Catholic University demand would you to remove it before anyone sees it and is damaged for life.

They sure were, my mom liked them!
@Scott - last time I saw them on tv (Taratata) I'm sure they used a p-bass or jazz bass or something Fenderesque at least...

Like your Nan's perfume, this music could get up your nose if you noticed it...but otherwise, it doesn't do anyone any harm.
Nice artwork.

Argh...

At least OMD
could actually play their instruments and perform live, unlike 99.99% of the current generation of lip-synching reality-TV alumni... The fact that they only had one truly good album (Architecture and Morality) and that they sounded like bad Muzak on just about everything else they released is beside the point.... Next you'll be opining that the Wiggles are just a kid's band!
BTW In their halcyon days McKluskey usually played a grey Jazz Bass strung lefty...

Any music lover should be able to appreciate electronic music if the music demanded real musicianship, singing and songwriting. Not all electronic music is bad, and Orchestral Maneuvers in Dark and the album Dazzle Ships proved as such. Much more of the writing team of Andy McKlunskey and Paul Humphreys continued the catalogue. Ricks just added the bottom to accompany Humphreys' incredible voice!

I remember seeing that TOTP clip. Around that time, OMD also had a pic in the NME in which someone had taken a photo of AM from behind, with that Ric bass wonderfully captured in profile.
While wandering around Canterbury in a lunch hour from my first week or so in college, at the same time, I came across a brand new JG 4001 in the window of a music shop behind the Marlowe theatre, and remember gazing through the window at it. At 350GBP in was well out of my league, but that certainly kept the fire burning until I did have the $$$ a few months later.
