Strap Bolt Swap

Post by MaplegloMatt »

OK, this has probably been covered before but I couldn't find the answer I was looking for when searching the forum. So, while I await my delivery from the RIC Boutique I thought I'd seek some advice. I've ordered two of the older style strap bolts to install on my '89 4003 which came with the newer Schaller style strap locks. I know many of you wouldn't consider this swap a move in the right direction but I liked the older style bolts on my old 4001 and wanted to change the style of strap bolt while switching to chrome trim. It seems the holes for the Shcallers are smaller in diameter and those appear to be self tapping wood screws. Because the strap bolts are machine screws does the size of the hole need to be enlarged or drilled out? Or, should I just try to crank them in and the smaller diameter hole will the grab the threads? Any advice appreciated.

The threaded part of the vintage bolts and the Schallers are identical, so something sounds amiss, here. Can you post some photos?

Sorry, it's just me putting the cart before the horse. I'm still waiting for the strap bolts to arrive and from what I've seen in photos the two versions seem to be different sizes. I assumed (yes, we all know what happens when you do that!) they are different. If I encounter any real problems I'll let you know. It's nice to know the forum is here just in case!
Now back to your regularly scheduled program............. :D

Standard Schallers use wood screws. RIC uses custom made strap bolts that have the Schaller head design, but have the same thread as the old style bolts...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
