what tuning gears were used on the 4001 basses in 1974? I'm seeing everything from Kluson to grover, to the tulip shaped gears you'd find on an Ibanez. can someone shed some light please?

My late '75 has the reverse Klusons.

It's not a stupid question Miles! '74 was yet another transition year for the 4001:

Grovers were used in early '74 but petered out late in the year. My March '74 4000 had Grovers (replaced by giant Schalleresque things by the previous owner) and my September '74 has reverse Klusons. The tulip tuners you refer to were never standard Rickenbacker fittings to my knowledge.

my June '74 4001 has the Wavey Grovers on it.

My July '74 has Wavey Grovers as well.

My 74 firglo had Grovers too. All early features on that bass except it had two high gains.

Thanks guys. One of the stores in the new england based chain I work for took in a 74 MG 4001 but there's no pictures for it, and I was called for a second opinion on what the price should be on it, and the more I keep thinking about the bass the more I think I want it. Id even give up my 96 4003 that I love for it, but we'll see.

I bought my late lamented 74 in Daddy's Junky music sometime around 1999 in Shrewsbury, MA, I forgot what I paid for it but it was 200.00 more than regular 4001's were going for at the time, I think I paid around 700.00 for it, maybe a little more:lol:

Ironically thats the company I work for. I've bought all of my Rick basses but 1 from DJM and have been very lucky each time. When this one came in I was called for the second opinion onit, and I was told it was in really good shape. I called a few weeks later for it and it was sent to repair for unknown reasons. As soon as its done there its getting shipped to my store for me to evaluate. I guess I'll make my decision as to how much I want it. I've had a MG before in the past and loved it but I gave it up because it was a bit of a mongrel.

There used to be a Daddy's in Cambridge; now long gone. The one in Peabody (or is it Danvers?) never seems to have anything worth a second look (just axes for North Shore mullet-rockers). Where's this one going?

Wow I just realized Cambridge was gone. Yes there's a store in Peabody and there was a store in Danvers but it was shut down. I worked for this company years ago when business was booming. Then I went to Guitar Center for a while, and now I'm back at Daddy's again. I work in the Warwick, RI store. It looks like I may have had my hopes up for nothing, the bass was taken out of the system. Could mean one of two things though, it was sold or its in transit to the repair station.
