Here's a short article and video on the teenage band that opened for Justin Bieber on his tour this year:

The forumites with no kids will have no idea who I'm talking about (which is just as well) but the videos for Big Time Rush have the bass actor using a 4003JG.

I bought mine at 19 after saving up for a long time. My dad has played guitar for 30 years and had wanted one when he was younger. He got all jealous when I bought it.

I bought my first Rick when I was 17 as well; a JG 4001.

This trend will probably continue. I put a deposit on my first Ric (the Mapleglo 4003) at age 20. I had been chasing Paul d'Amour's tone for four or five years, and then one day browsing the web I realized I should probably get a Rickenbacker because it was listed as his bass on toolshed.down.net. Not able to stand the wait for the Ric on order I outright bought another, convinced I'd sell the one I liked less of the two once the first order came in. Well... I still have both of them.

Some way or other I think young people will keep bumping into Rics and having similar experiences of slight mystification at first... I know I was pretty enchanted with the whole thing after being frustrated with my Jazz and my Stingray for several years.

It took me WAY too long (17 years) to get a Ric. I played Fenders for years and tried to convince myself that my hands would stretch over time to accomodate the neck. In the midst of this self-inflicted torture, I got thinking about all the bands I've liked over the years and realized that every bass player in these bands had a Ric at a pivotal time in their career. So, earlier this year, I sold the Fenders, got a '10 4003 JG and finally feel like the Ric is the right bass. I then sold the EBMM Sterling Classic and got a '08 4003FL MG. Now I have 2 Rics and nothing else and I feel like I have all I need for a long time to come.

I received my first Rick (JG 4003 ZG1845) as a b-day present from the parents. It was the first of many...I wish I could find it now...

All you have to do is look at videos of kids on YouTube, Rickenbacker basses are all over the place and 90% of the Rickenbacker bass videos are all kids or then again maybe I'm just a geezer now (at 57) I bought my first Rick bass when I was 24. I do definitely think they are very popular amongst young players though.

Back in 1986, at the ripe old age of 16, I cashed in a $200 savings bond from my aunt to get a '74 4001. It was my first "real" bass & I had been lusting after a Rick for some time. I was a dream come true & I still have it!
