I was wondering if Ric made any fretless C64 or V63 basses. I've never seen any, but who knows, perhaps they made several like that.

I know they did several midnight blue C64 & C64S basses, both gloss and matte finish, and also a gun-metal gray finish (only one that I saw advertised by a dealer).

It certainly would be cool if either of these models were fretless.

Don't know of any fretless, but wouldn't count it out. One thing about RIC production history: The only absolute is that there are no absolutes. As soon as someone here says "There never was a xxxxxxx . . . " somebody from the company would say "Except for this one (or these, or this whole bunch)". While RIC doesn't have a "custom shop" as such, the company has been known to produce special instruments for certain celebrity performers and friends.

Given that this model is approaching the end of its production run, I have to wonder if RIC will produce several oddities just for the sake of doing it. A fretless C64 4001 would surly command attention and garner a premium price.

Imagine a C64 fretless in Montezuma Brown!

Or Walnut!

Or Autumnglo !

Imagine the above three done up as a matching set with sequential serial numbers!

There have been some nifty fretless Ricks out there. Gary Clauson's Burgundy 4000 FL, Bill Henshell's Mapleglo 4001S FL, Ginger Lee's 4002 FL! (no pic). I even had a pretty rare one for a time, a 4003 FL in Jetglo with BT/BH. I sold it to Jared Nakanishi in HI years ago.

I'll bite. There never was a factory fretless 4001c64 or 4001v63.

Not a fretless, but an example of something interesting that came out of the factory. Ben Hall said that they decided to paint the last few C64S basses Mid Blue (six in total including one in satin), because they thought it looked cool!

I should also mention that when I asked John Hall about how they came up with the Sea Green finish for the 2000 COY, he said the guys in the paint shop mixed it up, they thought it looked cool, so they ran with it.

Sure wish they do some C64 4001 up in that sea green color!!!!

I recall that Olivia's had several of the C64 series in midnight blue. I wonder where they got them from - they aren't an authorized Rickenbacker dealer.

I think Music Zoo originally had a regular Mid Blue C64S and the satin one. I believe Olivia's bought both and re-sold them. I got mine from a dealer in Georgia (who was actually in the process of shutting down his store). I believe Chris at POTR also received one.

Well, you can come close to that with Olivia that has a Sea Green V63 for sale. They seem to have had it for quite a while and I think the high price is why. It's not up on eBay right now, but occasionally comes back around.
