I enrolled in a course at OCAD (Ontario College of Art & Design)
String Instrument Design and Construction
CSSI 1N01, 10 weeks
Thursdays, 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Jan 13-Mar 17, 2011
Prerequisite: some art, design, professional craft training, or equivalent experience.
In this unique hands-on class, Students have the amazing opportunity to study with master luthier Philip Davis to build their own violin or guitar (electric, classical or steel string).
I'm going to build an acoustic.

Best wishes. Sounds quite exciting. Of course there probably will be those on the forum who expect a photographic record of your progress.

Nice one, Greg!
A friend of mine did a similar course over here and ended up with one of the best acoustics I've ever seen and played.

Sounds like a great class! I'll be waiting for the pics!
Hmm, now that I'm back in civilization, I'll have to check to see if something similar exists around here...

And it begins!
First class was thursday evening, mostly a discussion on what we hoped to achieve, some basic principals etc.
Today I went to pick out wood at a place in the burbs called Exotic Woods. The staff was excedingly helpful
So this will all eventually become a guitar?
Curly sides!
Curly back!
Back with centre strip!
Three legged cat in the snow!
It's roasted curly maole. It smells so good!
The neck is hard white maple and the fretboard is Honduras Rosewood. The piece on the righ of the first pic is an off-cut of the maple sides that I'm going to use for the headstock veneer & maybe a soundhole rosette. The top will be Sitka Spruce (not pictured)
I an giddy with excitement!
Stay tuned!
