Skip to about the 10:30 mark to see them doing a brilliant version of "Heatwave".

That footage of 'Heatwave' is the best I've seen of the Who from that era. Great sound - you can feel the atmosphere.

There were some great shots of Pete's Ric & John was playing a Ric as well. It's a shame it was typical 60's photography that mostly were head shots & didn't show much of the guitar playing.

It's Entwistle. It's Townshend. It's Daltrey.

After all these years people still can't spell their names.

I can spell Moon!

But seriously, check out the remastered version of 'Tommy', preferably on SACD, and you will see that Keith Moon's driving drum rhythms were the bedrock of the Who's music and perfect foil to Entwistle's bass and Townshend's guitar work.

Townshend was a genius - but I will never forgive him for smashing those Rickenbackers on stage!

Question from a "whippersnapper"... is this because TV screens were typically much smaller then?

I've seen "Rock and Roll Circus" and hands down The Who had the best performance, much better than the Rolling Stones. I think that is why Jagger kept it unreleased for so many years.

I thought the Who were embarrassing on RRC(unlike the awesome performance in the OP). The Stones totally owned the night! Dirty Mac was great too.

+1. "A Quick One" on RRC was pure rock and roll energy. The Who always play second fiddle to the Beatles and Stones in the history of rock, but they are every bit as good and in many cases better IMHO.

I read that Mick was very disappointed with the Stones' set for RRC. They didn't take the stage till 4 in the morning and were all exhausted. That's why it took so long to release the film.

Yes, I'd heard that they went on very late. That said, Jagger was still able to summon up his remaining energy from somewhere, which was pretty amazing on his part.
