I have a chance to pick up a DX7 cheap. Is it worth it for just funnin' around?

John, It's one of the best keyboards of it's era and they are still very functional. IMO of course.

Check out how many sound ROM cards are included. They make a big difference. You can find them on Ebay, but ...

I have one as well as the TX7 expander module.. Paid $450.00 for both. Very nice polyphonic synth that is very simple to use. I can heartily recommend it.

Better than swearing at them.
Thanks for the input all. Sorta what I'd been led to believe. It has 2 ROM cards, a stand, and an amp. Was my Bro-in-laws. So the price will be right.
Any others with similar or conflicting experiences?

Top synth of the '80s. Much more user-friendly and reliable than an ARP Quadra, and more common and better built than an Oberheim OB-X. I say go for it!!!

Just saw this thread and can't reply fast enough... yes they are awesome! Not for if you need a keyboard that's easy to use and program in your own sounds to use with your cover band, but very fun to play with and learn all about frequency modulation. And if you don't want it I will give it a good home for you!

If you are keen to the FM Synth sound it's a great deal. I can't see really comparing it to the ARP or the Oberheim though. It's a bit like comparing a Rick 650 to a ES-175 IMHO. Or Gerbils to ferrets.

Yep. But all three were the top end poly synths of their era.
So perhaps more like Cadillac/Mercedes/Jaguar...
