Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and just wanted to say hello. I'm a Gibson player (Les Pauls, SGs and 335s) but I have a very serious bout of G.A.S. for a 330/6 at the moment (I blame Weller, Cradock and Marr). There don't seem to be many of them around in this part of the world and when they do pop up they are astronomically priced!

I'm likely to have to buy used sight unseen from the US and I'm concerned that I won't be able to adjust to the feel of the guitar due to the narrower nut width and lacquered finger board. Are there any 330s with wider necks? Is there anything I need to look out for when buying a used RIC?

Well, there are a few folks on the forum in NZ, though I can't recall a lot of posts from 'em. One of them might have something you could try. Of course, if you pop over to OZ sometime, there are a fair number of folks there on the forum.

So, where in NZ? North Island, South? I came pretty close to moving there a while back, sometimes still wish I had...

As a life-long dabbler with various stringed instruments with their accompanying varied neck widths, I can pretty much assure you that you'll adapt to the 330 neck. Welcome to the RRF.

You wont need any more use for another guitar when you buy your 330.The 330 is the one best rickenbackers IMHO

Welcome to the forum Chris. My FG 330 has captivated me since I bought it a while back. My other guitars don't get much of a look in. It is a great player.

Thanks again for the welcome. I'm in Wellington right at the bottom of the North Island, I moved here from the UK about 5.5 years ago and I ain't ever going back!

Cool, Wellington seems like a decent place, but a bit too crowded for me. We were leaning towards the Christchurch area. I can understand never wanting to go back, of course, here in Montana, U.S.A., we've got it pretty good too. Still, I'd like to be close to mountains and the ocean...

I actually struggle a little when changing between different guitars. Not so much between different Gibsons because they aren't all that different (that said I had an SG I had to sell cause its neck was just too thin). However, I have a Custom Shop Strat that I never play because I can't get used to the scale length difference.

Wellinton only has twice the number of people living here as the town I lived in in the UK. Auckland on the otherhand is a sprawling mess. I haven't actually been to Christchurch so I can't really comment on it. They had a major quake there a couple of months ago and have been suffering aftersocks ever since, its a bit of a surprise really cause everyone is waiting for the big one to hit Wellington.

There are quite noticeable differences between nut widths and scale-lengths on SG necks, Strat necks and Ric necks. I hope you get a chance to try a Ric and feel the difference ....

I was under the impression that Rickenbackers have the same scale length as Gibsons (24.75), is this not the case? I dug out my Assembled in America Epiphone John Lennon Revolution Casino and measured the nut width and it appears to be the same as a 330. I find this guitar quite comfortable to play so I am assuming that I won't actually any issue with a 330!

Welcome. My daughter got back in May 2010 after spending 18 months wandering the islands. Coromandel was her favorite, but she spent time in many places. A 330 is the platform that the most popular Ric's sprung from - you can't go wrong!
