Not being overly familiar with those, I just noticed there's Stringtone on the triple version - kind of vibrato?

Stringtone tuners allow you to switch quickly between different open tunings. This is what the pedals do on a pedal steel (of course, those have more options and are a bit more refined). This was something that came about sometime around when pedals were first being made, maybe before. They are a cam action device that stretches certain strings to retune them.

With a steel bar on the strings to get your notes, you don't really need a vibrato, you just wiggle the bar...

I've seen pedal steels used by german c&w band Truck Stop on tv, and that's about it - I don't know anything about them :(
