Hi there, excuse me if this has been already covered.

It is legal to sell on the bay jack plate / serial plate of a rick bass ?

I saw that, too. The person is parting the bass out.

I suppose if it's your instrument, you can do whatever you like with it.

It just makes buying stuff on the bay, or where ever, that much scarier - with respect to whether it's original and legit.

It's not a problem to sell authentic parts, it's just too bad that someone is parting out a Rick. On the other hand, sometimes people need spare parts. I just hope the authentic RIC parts go onto another authentic RIC instrument and not someone's faker.

Ok nothing wrong with the guy selling the plate, but it's the first time i saw a plate for sale and i don't know how to behave.

I hope it will not be used to fake the date of another rick bass.

It happens quite a lot. There's a guy known around here as "The Jersey Butcher" who is well known for parting out Ricks and other guitars. We used to be able to enter his serial numbers into The Register so that we could record that it was a parted out instrument, but he decided to stop listing the numbers in his auctions.

I entered that serial number a few days ago as a "Butchered" instrument along with the info on the bass it came from. At least that way, if someone does a search for the serial number, they'll know where it came from...

I bought a dual jack plate off Ebay about four years ago. It was from a whole box of 70s Rick bass parts; bass players had brough in basses to the shop for modification-ouch. I used the jack plate on my Blue Boy when I had it converted from a 330 to a 365 WB.

Curious Paulie, do you use the "original" 330 serial number or the e-bay bass plate serial number when registering a converted guitar like your Blue Boy ?? Or do you hyphenate the two serial numbers

umm what number did you register? in the auction the two final numbers are covered

I used SI4484. In the original listing he didn't have the numbers covered. I seem to remember he even stated them in the text for both the plate and the guitar body.

This is a timely post. There's a big thread going on on the other forum about a counterfeit bass that has the identical serial number as one that is owned by a moderator.

Slacker that I am about such things, I haven't registered the guitar. Good question though. . . . I was planning on taping the original mono jack plate on the inside of the control cavity though. Currently, it's still in the case in a sealed, double-padded bag with the rest of the bits.
