Jangle Quest for 12Ks

I have tried all three versions of the Jbox through a 50watt tube vintage Crate, with every combination of settings and never achieved anything close to the sound clips on the Jbox site. i am using a MG 360 12 with 12K pick ups. I have even emailed the guy on U tube who plays the Byrds tunes on his McGuinn RIC with 12ks but prefers the Jbox and told me that the Jbox, to him, sounds just like the on board comp on the McGuinn, but with less noise.

Is there a secret ingrdient I am missing to get that "BACK FROM RIO" sound. I know the RIC 12Ks can sing as evidenced in the maxed overdrive channel, so has anyone had success with another device?

I would guess that your 'problem' could be with the amp that you are using.

What ever amp you are using, you need it to be set to sound as clean as possible. That is why a lot of Ric playing folk tend to prefer using certain Fender and Vox amps.

A way to be certain that the amp is the problem here, is if you have the means of listening to your guitar and JB direct.
If you have recording equipment, plug your guitar into the JB and then the JB straight into your recorder and have a listen to the tone you get then.
If you are using the original JB, make sure you have the tone switch on bright and start off with the gain and attack knobs at 12 o'clock.

Let us know how you get on.

Donnell,

I would follow Rob's advice and try to record directly with either the original JB or the JB2. Those clips on the Janglebox website were all recorded straight into the board. I've heard from folks on this forum that the JB2 in particular is absolutely wonderful for direct recording. Roger McGuinn uses one in his home studio.

My 330/12 has hi gain pickups which I believe have an impedance of 12k, and that guitar sounds like a million dollars through my Janglebox JB2. It just took me a little while to dial in the right settings on the pedal and on my amp. (I use a solid state Fender Princeton Chorus amp.) It could be that you're just not using an amp that's compatible with your Rick and Janglebox. You might take your guitar and JB2 to a music store and try other amps. I would highly recommend either a Fender Twin or a Vox AC15 or AC30.

Does it have the 0.0047 cap in the bridge pick up? That may or may not help.

IMO I had 12K's in my 330/12 and thought they were a bit harsh. I replaced them with 7.5K's and it is much smoother and janglier. (Note that I LOVE the 12K's in my 6 stringers!)
