One of the other members (Ric N. Backer) asked if my pickguard was original because mine is longer between the pick ups ,I pulled off the pickguard again and closely examined to find any previous holes, there were no previous holes, which got me wondering, did the guys at Rickenbacker put on an older pickguard because they ran out of newer ones or was this a test and also what I noticed was the word FIRE was crossed out and NAT was written, started out as a fireglo ended up a mapleglo. My grovers are not the wavy ones, they're flat and has 20 frets.Does anybody knows what other varieties are out there other than the 21 frets.

your '71 does not mean it was made in '71, just means it had a '71 jackplate attached to it depending on the order received, thus the color code scratch out. could have been a late '69-early '70 piece of wood and had a later plate. the guard looks like a '68/'69. but with RIC , anything is possible. a rare bird indeed.

The only one I own, so I can't speculate. This one is definitely all original, though.

"The ONLY one I own."
I like that.
Well, if there was just one to own, that would be it!
Very nice indeed.

Sometimes they don't have the tugbar. As in "never installed," not just removed or missing. But that might be more of a '72 thing, as they phased it out by '73.

Graham,
That's pretty interesting about your guard. I agree with Ron that it was probably a '69 bass that hung around the factory.
Your's should have the flat Grovers. These were installed from early '69 to about mid '72.
What month is your '71?
