Does anyone know what Bach piece that intro to "Mr. Tambourine Man" was based on?

It isn't based on any Bach piece, truthfully. Instead, the most one could say is that it was inspired by the sort of counter melody he employed in his chorale setting of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." McGuinn actually quoted it in his solo to Gene Clark's "She Don't Care About Time."

Well, the list is made to please all it seems - which is especially made clear by the line they can't please all. Right...

Thanks, JimK, for clarifying the Bach influence in McGuinn's playing. I learned that solo to "She Don't Care About Time" note for note without knowing where it came from. Did he quote classical melodies in any other famous Byrds songs?

Hi, I'm probably dealing with a faulty memory here (no surprise), but I recall Roger saying that the interlude (over the cliff) part of Chestnut Mare was also based on a Bach piece. The Bach 'quote' in SDCAT inspired me to use 'Gloria, In Excelsis Deo" as the solo in my pseudo-Byrds cover of Silent Night, believing that Roger might have done something similar in a true Byrds version. That reminds me, I like to quote "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" in the middle of "Eight Miles High." It gets 'em every time.

Yeah, I can 'hear' that, Jim....... very creative. I'm seeing Roger in April. Do you want me to mention that to Camilla? Maybe he can replace that 007 lick in his acoustic version of 8MH (which I still enjoy) with "God Rest Ye...'. I think that half of Roger's typical crowd doesn't even notice the Bond riff, but I'm sure that your version would get most of 'em every time. Tom

To my knowledge, no. But I was never at the right place at the right time to hear him either solo or with the Byrds in concert. All I have are the recordings.

Oh......wait.....scratch that! He does quote "Asturias" a well known classical guitar piece composed by Isaac Albéniz when he plays an improv piece he calls "Echoes."
