Binding Repair

I have a 1990 JG V64/12. Lovely player and sounds fantastic but a little beat up. Has about an inch of binding missing near tailpiece bracket. The rest of the binding is aged beautifully to the normal yellowy colour you'd see on a genuine '60's Rick - gives the whole guitar a lovely vibe.

I'd like to replace the missing binding with as good a match as possible if its straightforward - has anybody done this or got any ideas on doing a match up repair?

No easy way unless you're a luthier. First, the binding must be glued, then leveled, then the paint matched on the slight overlap, then the binding should be tinted, then clearcoated, leveled and buffed out.

Many thanks for that info Paul - I was afraid that might be the pro view. Here in the UK I would probably be charged more than I paid for the guitar for that work! I think I will just leave as is and enjoy the vintage mojo.....

Makes sense to me, Eddie. "Above all do no harm."

Enjoy the mojo, which is invisible to you when playing and 90% of observers will miss, too.

i've got some yellowed binding from a '75 4001 that's going to the junkyard that you're welcomed to. what's cool is it's already pre-curved from the same area and you could splice it in and maybe have a slightly noticable line where the two pieces meet if done properly with a razor blade. gratis too !
