Any pointers for how best to cut the grooves in them? Particular "best tool(s)" for the job? Technique tips? Things to watch out for?

Any advice is much appreciated!!! :D

get a set of needle files available at hardware stores,(they are cheap !). line up each string under tension over the saddle and mark a nick or use a pencil where it should be lining up with the fretboard sides and pickup poles. i line them by eye, others use measuring devices to space them even. you can file the saddle groove in or out of the bass. if you do it in the bass, file from the mute side towards the rear of the tail piece. put some paper packing tape on the area where the inward curve is after the saddle bridge to protect the chrome so as not to scratch it. start filing with the round file slow and straight. ( some folks use the square or triangle file as well ) file just enough to hold the string in the groove under tension. then, slightly arc the groove to remove any sharp edges or burrs. do not file too much or the groove will catch the string on its sides causing it to grab the windings and cause tuning problems. (then you'll have to buy more saddles and start over.) when you're done , adjust the proper height of the saddle bridge you need for your playing preference and re-intonate the instrument. take your time ! i can't stress this enough if you're a novice.
