Pickups that occasionally distort?

Been through it all with this guitar- replaced the jack, checked wiring and I think it's the neck pickup. I have never had anything like this- guitar sounds great, then a 'fuzzing' distortion (not the good kind!). Is it the pickup? What could cause something like this?

This would not be a modern Hi-Gain would it?
I've had Hi-gains that seemed only to fuzz out on certian notes on both bass and guitar.
I always put it down to the close proximity of the pole to the strings and the hot winding. It seemed to create hot spots on the neck...
Is it something like that?

Eden.

Actually it's a replacement toaster. Completely unpredictable, but your explanation sounds plausible- did seem to occur at the same spot a few times.

Check the pickup selector switch, I had the same problem in my 360/12V64 and I looked under the pickguard and saw a mass of dust. Took a Q-tip, cleaned it right out and it's been fine ever since.

I would check the solder connections at the pickup. I have seen one new toaster with similar a issue.
