How do they compare soundwise to 4000 series?

Totally diferent!

I love the pickup in these basses.I used to put them in 4001's all the time in the neck location.
Big Deep and growling .Rivals a Fender.

Looks like a Rick on steroids.

Both the 3000 and 3001 are nice.Too bad they didn't use a wood like alder to make the bodies and glue the necks in.
I have made alder bodies with the 4001 shape for several people.
reuse most of the parts and you get a classic look that sounds awsome, and it's a sleeper. No one knows what it is!

The 3000 and 3001 basses comprise less that one half of one percent of the total registrations to the Rickenbacker Registation Page. Assuming that the Reigstry is representative of what is taking place in the real world (and I hope this is the case) this finding makes the instrument a statistical rarity of sorts. Following up on Marks comments, it would be interesting to hear from the 3000 series owners with respect to the playability and sound as well.

I'll second what Mark said about putting the 3000
PU in the neck of a 4001[he's the one that suggested it!]I did this for a couple guys, ans , Man, the 3000PU Killed the stock Hi Gains they replaced.Unfortunately, the 3000 PUs are no longer
available, and back in the late 80s when I did this, the factis I was ordering these from Rick
as what was already New/Old stock;the basses had been discontinued sometime earlier. But if you own a 4001 from the late 70s or so, and hate the neck PU and maybe stumble on a 3000/3001 bass for cheap[I think one I saw a few months back was going for under $350]Buy it! Then you can at least take the PU out of it and experiment.

Plus you can put the High gain pickup into the 3000 series bass and get rid of it.

I would love to make more mods to these ...so if you stumble upon one for dirt cheap ,let me know.

I just bought a 3001 and think it sounds great.
I also own a 4003 and a 4005 but the 3001 is
really powerful. Lots of low end, nice dark sound.
Still that nicknack ring high up the neck.
It is a bit bulky and actually kind of heavy for such a small bass.
The neck is a bit chunky and does not play as nice as my other ricks. This could also be because mine had seen a lot of abuse in the past
and the fingerboard came loose on the top of the neck and was then dodgy repaired.
I am having it professionally repaired at the moment. This is going to cost me though and it
will turn out to be an expensive item.
Certainly a recommendation if you can find one
under 600 US $
